Chapters 1-10 (D) Cars and the 1930s.

          Cars became hugely popular in the 1930s. New types of cars were created, designs kept changing, and the automobile industry continuously improved their cars. The mechanical side of cars were more focused on. Cars soon had trunks, breaks and gear shifts , along with many other innovations that improved the safety and comfort of driving a car. All of the new improvements and changes were an effort to attract new buyers. Luxury cars became things only the few that were rich could afford. The designs and beauty of cars attracted many people. Because of the Great Depression many car companies such as Stutz Motor and Pierce-Arrow Car went out of business because of the spiraling economy.           Because of the economy crash, those who worked in the automobile industry were laid off and had no jobs and those who had jobs had to accept cut wages and more work hours. These conditions led to union strikes against car companies. The United Auto Workers Union went on strike against Ford Motors and Ford signed an agreement that gave Ford Motors workers' the best contracts. Click here
          Many were desperate to move to California to find work and money. Often times, car dealers would cheat families that knew little about cars and sell them any car they could find.
